GCC Mernes '09
June 28th 2009
Simo Kirssi couldn´t come to grips with the track at round four of the German Cross Country Championships (GCC).
The hillside course at Mernes proved to be quite a challenge for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider, who ended the race in fourth place. The Finn had won five GCC event in a row, but saw his streak being ended by Hungary´s Kornel Nemeth.
Kirssi struggled already in 2008 with the Motocross-style layout at the "Speedhang", and failed to find his rhythm from the word go. Following the Le Mans-type start procedure, the Scandinavian circulated the track in fifth place - and would never find his feet as the race went on. The reigning champ eventually crossed the finish line three minutes behind Nemeth, with whom he is now tied in the point standings.
Simo Kirssi: "I just couldn´t concentrate and certainly feel unhappy with today´s performance. I´m used to get going after a couple of laps, but not so here at Mernes. Don´t really know why. It has not been about the bike, that´s for sure. Guess I simply had a bad day.“
